Aluminum Sliding vs. Folding Doors for Texas Patios and Pools

By · · 5 min read

Aluminum folding doors opening a living room to a patio

Both systems open the back of the house to the patio. The difference is how much of the wall opens, how much glass you see when they are closed and how they handle daily use.

Aluminum sliding doors

Sliding panels glide on tracks and stack behind each other. Because each panel is large, you get more glass and fewer frame lines when the doors are closed, which keeps the view clean all year.

Multi-slide systems can cover very wide openings by adding panels. The stacked panels still cover part of the opening when the doors are open, unless the wall is designed with a pocket.

Aluminum folding (bifold) doors

Folding panels hinge to each other and fold into a compact stack at one or both ends. When fully open, almost the entire wall disappears, which is why bifolds are popular on patios and pool decks used for entertaining.

A traffic door can be included so you can go in and out without opening every panel.

Side by side

  • Opening width: folding doors open almost the full wall; sliding doors leave the stacked panels in place.
  • View when closed: sliding doors have larger glass and fewer frame lines.
  • Everyday use: sliders open with one panel; folding systems work best with a traffic door.
  • Weather: both perform well in Texas with thermally broken frames, Low-E insulated glass and the right threshold for exposed openings.

Which one is right for your home?

If you want the widest possible opening for entertaining, choose folding doors. If you mostly look through the glass and open the doors occasionally, sliding doors give you the bigger, cleaner view. Many homes use both: a folding system to the patio and sliders in other rooms.

Frequently asked questions

Sliding or folding doors: which is better?

Sliding doors keep larger glass panels and fewer frame lines; folding doors open more of the wall. We recommend the right system for each opening.

Are aluminum doors good for hot climates like Texas?

Yes, when they use thermally broken frames and Low-E insulated glass. That combination keeps slim frames while reducing heat transfer.

Do folding doors let water in?

Properly specified thresholds, sealing and installation keep water out. For exposed openings we often recommend out-fold systems and a specific threshold.
