Single, Double or Pivot? How to Choose the Right Iron Entry Door

The size of your opening narrows the choice quickly, but style and how you use the entry matter just as much. Here is how the three main configurations compare.

Single iron doors

A single door is the most common choice for standard openings. Our standard single size is 36" × 96", and we build to any opening. Sidelites and a transom can be added to bring in more light and make the entry look wider.

Best for: standard entries, side entries, and homes where the front door sits under a porch.

Double iron doors

Double doors fill wider openings and create a formal, symmetrical entry. Our standard double size is 72" × 96", and tall or arched versions are popular on two-story foyers.

Usually one leaf is the everyday door and the other stays latched, opening only when you need the full width to move furniture or host guests.

Best for: wide entries, traditional and Mediterranean homes, and foyers with tall ceilings.

Pivot iron doors

A pivot door turns on pivots set into the floor and the head of the frame instead of hinges on the side. That lets the panel be much larger and gives it a smooth, balanced swing.

Pivot doors are the signature of modern homes: one oversized panel, often with a long vertical handle and a lot of glass.

Best for: modern and contemporary homes, extra-wide openings and entries designed as the focal point of the facade.

Questions to ask before you choose

  • How wide and tall is the opening, and can it change in a remodel?
  • Is the entry covered, or does it face direct sun and rain?
  • Do you want privacy glass, clear glass, or a mix?
  • Do the doors need to match iron windows or railings on the same elevation?

Send us a photo of your entry with these answers and we will recommend a configuration with a free estimate.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard size of an iron entry door?

Our standard sizes are 36" × 96" for a single door and 72" × 96" for a double door, but every door is built to the opening.

What is the difference between a pivot door and a regular door?

A regular door hangs on hinges at the edge of the frame. A pivot door turns on pivots in the floor and the top of the frame, which allows a much larger panel.

Can a pivot door be added to an existing home?

Often, yes. Many remodels widen or re-frame the opening. We review the structure first and explain what is involved.
