Patio Doors in Houston: French vs Sliding vs Folding Doors

By · · 7 min read

The back of a Houston house works hard. Patios and pool decks are used most of the year, summer afternoons bring heavy rain, and the sun on a west-facing wall is relentless. The patio door you choose changes how that space feels and how well it holds up. Most projects come down to three options: iron or steel French doors, aluminum sliding doors and aluminum folding doors. Here is how they compare for Houston homes.

The three options at a glance

  • French doors: two glass doors that swing open from the center, usually in iron or steel with divided lites. Classic, secure and the natural match for an iron front door.
  • Sliding doors: large glass panels that glide on a track and stack behind each other. Slim aluminum frames, big views and no swing space.
  • Folding doors (bifolds): a row of hinged panels that fold against each other and stack at one or both ends, opening almost the full width of the wall.

French doors: the classic choice

Iron and steel French doors are the most requested patio door on traditional, Mediterranean and transitional homes, from brick houses in Memorial and Tanglewood to new builds in Katy and Cypress. Steel frames are slim, so a pair of French doors is mostly glass while keeping the divided-lite look that suits these elevations. Common pairs are 60" or 72" wide and 80" to 96" tall, and wider walls can take multi-panel systems with fixed and operable sections.

French doors swing, so they need clear floor space inside or outside. In-swing is common on covered patios; out-swing saves interior space and helps against wind-driven rain. For a full comparison of materials, read steel French doors vs wood and fiberglass.

Sliding doors: big glass, no swing

Aluminum sliding doors are the choice when the view is the priority. Large panels glide and stack behind each other, so a living room or primary suite opens to the pool without doors swinging into the furniture. Two-panel sliders fit a standard patio opening; multi-slide systems with three, four or more panels open most of a wide wall, and pocket systems slide into the wall so the opening disappears.

Because the panels never swing, sliders are practical where a door would hit a patio table or an interior wall. Their main limit is that part of the opening always stays covered by the stacked panels.

Folding doors: open the whole wall

Aluminum folding doors fold into a compact stack, so almost the entire width of the wall opens. That is why they are the favorite for outdoor kitchens, pool houses and living rooms that open to a covered patio. A traffic door built into the system works as an everyday door, so you do not need to open every panel to step outside.

Bifolds have more frame lines than sliders when closed, and they need space for the stacked panels to fold into. Sliding vs folding is its own decision; our guide to aluminum sliding vs folding doors goes deeper.

What Houston weather means for each one

  • Rain: Houston storms drop a lot of water fast. Thresholds and drainage matter more than the door type. Out-swing French doors and out-fold bifolds are often recommended for exposed openings, and covered patios give every option more margin.
  • Humidity: iron, steel and aluminum do not swell or warp like wood, so doors keep closing evenly through the summer. A good finish and touch-ups on chips keep metal looking right.
  • Heat: on west- and south-facing walls, insulated Low-E glass does the most for comfort. Aluminum sliders and bifolds use thermally broken frames, and Blackline builds thermally broken iron and steel doors on request.
  • Storms: whatever you choose, a sealed, properly anchored frame is what keeps wind-driven rain out.

How to choose for your opening

  • Opening up to about 6 feet wide, traditional or transitional home: iron or steel French doors.
  • Wide opening facing a view, modern or transitional home: aluminum sliding doors.
  • Outdoor living area you use often, and you want the wall fully open: aluminum folding doors.
  • Iron front door and modern back: many Houston homes pair an iron entry with aluminum sliders or bifolds at the back, in the same black finish.

Replacing an old patio slider

One of the most common Houston projects is replacing an aging aluminum or vinyl slider that no longer seals. The existing opening can usually take iron French doors sized to fit, or a new aluminum system; some remodels widen the opening for a multi-slide or bifold after a review of the structure. We measure the opening, remove the old door and install the new one with new sealing and trim.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best patio door for a Houston home?

It depends on the opening and the style of the house. Iron or steel French doors suit traditional and transitional homes; aluminum sliders suit wide openings with a view; bifolds suit outdoor living areas that need the whole wall open.

Are French doors or sliding doors better in the rain?

Both can keep water out when the threshold, drainage and installation are right. Out-swing French doors help against wind-driven rain, and covered patios give any door more protection.

Can you replace my sliding patio door with French doors?

Yes. It is one of our most common projects. We measure the existing opening, remove the slider and install iron French doors sized to fit, with new sealing and trim.

Do folding doors work as an everyday door?

Yes. A traffic door built into the system works as a regular hinged door, so you do not have to open every panel.

Do you install patio doors in Houston?

Yes. Patio and French door replacements are among our most common Houston projects, across Memorial, Katy, The Woodlands, Sugar Land and the rest of Greater Houston.
