Wrought Iron and Steel Front Doors in Houston: Styles, Prices and What Works in Our Climate

A wrought iron or steel front door is one of the few upgrades that changes how the whole house looks from the street. In Houston, it also has to survive long summers, high humidity and Gulf storms. This guide covers the styles that work on Houston homes, what a custom iron front door costs, and the details that keep it looking right for decades.
Why wrought iron front doors are so popular in Houston
Houston builds a little of everything: brick traditionals in River Oaks and Tanglewood, modern rebuilds in Bellaire and West University, Mediterranean homes in Memorial and Sugar Land, and farmhouse and transitional homes across Katy, Cypress and The Woodlands. An iron front door works on all of them because the design adapts to the house. The material stays the same; the shape of the top, the glass and the grid change.
Iron and steel also solve a problem that wood struggles with here. Wood doors swell, warp and need refinishing in the humidity, and builder-grade fiberglass doors rarely give a front elevation the presence a custom home deserves. A well-built iron door keeps its shape and its line for decades.
Wrought iron front door styles that suit Houston homes
Most of the iron front doors we build in Houston fall into one of these four styles:
- Traditional arched. Full arch or eyebrow tops with divided lites, often as a pair. The natural choice for brick and limestone homes in River Oaks, Kingwood and older parts of Memorial.
- Transitional divided-lite. Square tops with a simple grid of two, four or six panes per leaf. Works on the farmhouse and transitional homes in Katy, Cypress and Spring, and matches black windows.
- Modern full-glass. One large pane per leaf with a slim iron frame. Popular on the new construction in Bellaire, West University and the Heights.
- Pivot door. One oversized leaf on a concealed pivot, for modern entries with tall openings. See our iron pivot doors.
Single doors with sidelights and double doors with a transom are common in every style. For two-story foyers, a taller door usually looks better than a standard 8-foot door with a large transom above it.
How much does a wrought iron front door cost in Houston?
Iron doors are priced by size first and options second. As a ballpark, our custom iron doors run around $145 per square foot of door before glass upgrades, special designs and site work. That puts common sizes here:
- Single door, 36" × 96": around $3,500.
- Double doors, 72" × 96": around $7,000.
- Tall double doors, 72" × 120": around $8,700.
Arched tops, sidelights, transoms, Low-E or textured glass, upgraded hardware and replacement work (removing an old door and frame) move the final number. Our full guide to custom iron door costs in Texas explains each factor.
What works in the Houston climate
Heat gets the attention, but in Houston moisture is the bigger test for a front door. Humidity stays high most of the year, and storms push rain sideways against the entry. These are the details that make an iron door hold up here:
- Finish. A durable finish on all faces of the iron, with chips touched up early so moisture never reaches bare metal.
- Weatherstripping and threshold. Seals that close evenly around the door and a threshold that sheds water away from the house, not into the foyer.
- Installation. A frame set level and sealed to the wall, so the door closes tightly and water has nowhere to collect.
- Glass. Low-E glass on west- and south-facing entries to cut heat gain in the foyer; rain or textured glass where privacy matters.
- Swing. Out-swing doors can resist wind-driven rain better on exposed entries; in-swing is more common under a covered porch. We recommend one per opening.
Single, double or with sidelights?
Start with the width of the opening. A standard single door fits openings around 36 to 42 inches wide; a pair starts around 60 inches. If your opening sits in between, sidelights are often a better answer than an oversized single door: they bring more light into the foyer and keep the door itself at a comfortable weight.
Double doors are the most requested front door we build in Houston because they give the house a stronger presence and a wider path for furniture and guests. We cover sizes and layouts in detail in double iron front doors: sizes, sidelights and costs.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a wrought iron front door in Houston?
As a ballpark, around $145 per square foot of door: about $3,500 for a 36" × 96" single and about $7,000 for a 72" × 96" double, before glass upgrades, special designs and site work.
Do iron front doors rust in Houston humidity?
Not when the finish is kept intact and the door is sealed and installed correctly. Touch up chips early, rinse off dirt and salt, and check the weatherstripping once a year.
Do iron doors get hot in the Houston sun?
Like any dark exterior surface, they absorb heat. Low-E glass, a good seal and a covered entry keep the foyer comfortable.
Can you replace my existing front door with iron?
Yes. We remove the old door and frame and install the new iron door built to the measured opening, with new sealing and trim.
