How to Measure Your Door Opening for a Custom Quote

You do not need exact measurements to get a quote. Rough sizes and a couple of good photos are enough for us to price your door. Here is how to take them in five minutes.
What you need
- A tape measure.
- Your phone camera.
- Five minutes and, ideally, a second person to hold the tape.
Step 1: Measure the width
Measure the opening from side to side at the top, the middle and the bottom. Write down the smallest of the three. If you are replacing an existing door, measure the full frame, not just the door slab.
Step 2: Measure the height
Measure from the floor or threshold to the top of the opening on the left, center and right. Again, write down the smallest number. For arched openings, also measure the height at the highest point of the arch.
Step 3: Take the right photos
- One straight-on photo of the whole entry from outside, including the wall around it.
- One photo from inside the house.
- A close-up of the top and the bottom of the frame.
- If there is an arch, sidelites or a transom, one photo that shows them clearly.
Step 4: Send it
Upload the photos and your rough sizes in our quote form. You can add up to six photos. We reply with pricing and a lead time, and if you move forward we confirm exact measurements on site before shop drawings and fabrication. Nothing is built from your tape measure alone.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need exact measurements to get a quote?
No. Rough sizes and photos are enough for an estimate. We confirm exact measurements on site before fabrication.
Should I measure the door or the opening?
Measure the opening, including the frame if you are replacing an existing door. That is what the new door is built to fit.
Can I send photos with my quote request?
Yes. Our quote form accepts up to six photos of your opening.
